In Search of the Perfect Sconce

I love rooms with layers: the more you look, the more there is to see. This is not a thumbs up for clutter. It's about meaningful - and dare I say it? - enlightening detail. Don't look askance! Let's take a look at my favorite wall sconce - or five. It's impossible to choose just one.

#1 THE SPOT LIGHT: The body of this sconce, clad in a linen shade, articulates. Spot it down, as shown, or adjust the light to set the mood.

#2 NEXT BEST THING TO CANDLELIGHT: This sculptural wall sconce is both simple and nuanced. The brass interior reminds me of the lining on a fine jacket. When switched on, look for beautiful candle-like light play on the wall.

#3 PERSPECTIVE CHANGER: This scone lays nearly flush to the wall with a simple backplate and bracket to secure an integral shade in alabaster. Most designers mount it vertically. Cool. But I prefer the horizontal position. Love options!

#4 THE ENVELOPE, PLEASE: I love this single fold "envelope" sconce. Best in a pair, flanking a sideboard or cabinet. This polished nickel version is my fave, but there's a dramatic nearly black burnished brass version too. Swoon.

#MY FAVORITE CONE HEAD: Conical shades are a signature of modern design, especially in floor lamps. I love this wall sconce makeover. I'll take two any day!
