Cover Story : My Charlotte client makes headlines in Luxe Magazine
As a designer, it's a dream-come-true to work with great clients with great taste, confidence and trust in me to bring their aspirations for home to life. When the completed home delights the client and attracts the attention of a national magazine ... well, that's the richest confection ever, truly icing on the cake. Have you seen the latest Luxe?
My Portland-born clients moved to Charlotte by way of Brooklyn, transitioning from loft to three-story red-brick Georgian home on a quiet leafy street.
"Formal living room" is not in my clients vernacular - or mine. I bathed the room in white (Benjamin Moore's China White is a favorite), and developed a richly textured neutral palette.
I love to create areas of interest within a larger space. Here I specified a simple architectural desk and put it to work with Philippe Starck's iconic ghost chair.
My clients collect what interests them and quite often it's art. Man with a Clarinet by Leslie Kerby, a Brooklyn artist, sits on the fireplace mantel, paired with a Chinese pen and ink they snagged at a Brooklyn stoop sale in their former life!
Rooms flow together in this Charlotte home - by design. The formal dining room is everything but formal, opening up to other rooms as well as gardens.
My client wanted a home that leads to "conversations and connections." This means accommodating spaces where everyone can ebb and flow together. Specifying a comfy sectional that can seat the whole family of four makes perfect sense.
I love juxtapositions. When I found this antique console, my clients said yes. The elegant ottomans with waterfall skirts are dressed in Belgian linen. The lamps are Barbara Cosgrove.
While this home is all about community and gatherings, private spaces are important to recharge. Hence, the Bernhardt shelter bed, button tufted and upholstered in charcoal linen. A swarthy counterpoint to the sleek white Oly Studio bedside.
Special thanks to the editors of Luxe and most especially Pam Jaccarino and Kate Abney. All praise to Brie Williams and Alison M. Blackwell, photographer and wordsmith respectively, who bring every detail to life in words and pictures!
