WHY INSTAGRAM FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS CHARLOTTE HOME.

INTERIOR DESIGNER LISA SHERRY'S CLIENTS LOVE THEIR CHARLOTTE, NC, HOME RENOVATION. NEARLY FOUR MILLION OTHERS DID TOO. FIND OUT WHY.

My first blog of the year is a look back, a deep dive into the Charlotte, North Carolina, family home that turned the heads of nearly four million Instagram viewers. Interior design is my passion and my profession. So it is by design that the space tapped into the needs, wants, hopes and dreams of my clients. But who knew the home would inspire so many more through the power of social media.

I invite you to take the Home Tour, and today’s Instagram post is a “director’s cut” of the original reel, liked, loved and viewed by so many. But first, come along with me as I reveal what makes this Charlotte home so very special – then, now and always.

ADVENTUROUS & TRUSTING CLIENTS

My clients are a busy and accomplished couple with three school-aged children and a Golden Retriever. They are skiers, surfers, snowboarders and sailors, full of life and love. They wanted a home that could contain their energy.

A year-long home renovation began with the Charlotte architectural firm of McClure Nicholson Montgomery Architecture, who drew up renovation plans. As one of their first insights, the team wisely recommended opening up a series of small cloistered rooms on the first floor of the home. And so a significant gut-renovation commenced, as Lisa Sherry Interieurs and Thompson Building Company joined the team.

OPEN-FLOOR PLAN FAMILY LIVING

Perched in Charlotte’s Foxcroft neighborhood – leafy, green and pastoral – the home is just a short distance from world-class shopping at Southpark and the heart of commerce and entertainment in Charlotte’s Uptown. My clients were attracted to the Lisa Sherry Interieurs aesthetic – light, bright and modern with spaces that are both luxe and livable. I saw immediately that the home had great bones – and some shortfalls, which the architectural plan solved beautifully.

To begin, a significant first floor demolition opened up the kitchen to a casual dining area and spacious family room, including a family game space. As the walls came down, light poured in – as expected. My team and I next focused on foundations and backgrounds. Throughout the first floor, we specified new six-inch white-oak panel floors and painted the entire space in Benjamin Moore’s China White, a warm white, but one without a hint of yellow. It’s fresh and modern, much like the homeowners.

TEXTILE TACTICS

To state the not-so-obvious, this home IS family friendly! Many Instagram commenters suspiciously questioned whether children and furry creatures would be welcome in the space. Absolutely. In the right hands, a neutral palette can be amazingly resilient and family friendly. To ensure both beauty and practicality Lisa Sherry Interieurs focused on specifying today’s performance fabrics, and layering in an abundance of natural texture in both woods and textiles.

The much-admired coffee table from Sublime Original is a great example. The rough-hewn, distressed coffee table is sophisticated and elegant – ready for cocktails or movie night. Simply put, the home honors nature. And, nature is never either over or under dressed!

Beautiful living area with sectional sofa, low game table, boom lamp and swing.
The playroom will grow and evolve as the children do. Fabrics and materials are all child-friendly.

ROOM TO PLAY

This Charlotte home is designed to celebrate living, not restrict it. My clients’ expectation is that both adults and wee ones have space to live, play, work and entertain. In fact, this luxurious space just might be the ultimate family home. The open-floor plan living room offers two spacious sofa arrangements, flat screen TV and game table for family fun. Two rattan barrel chairs (much beloved on Instagram) subtly “separate” kitchen and family room.

Additionally, an attached garage was converted to an actual Playroom with sectional seating, an expansive coffee table and flat screen TV. The perfect finishing touch is a rattan swing. Adults love it as much as the kiddos. And, not to worry. A new garage was constructed on the spacious property.

A SHORT COMMUTE TO THE OFFICE

In the world of Lisa Sherry Interieurs, the ideal floor plan and home design includes open and flowing spaces where all can gather, and private spaces, too. This home includes a multi-functional home office. Lisa Sherry Interieurs recommended a quartet of comfortable club chairs with a center coffee table, a perfect marriage of form and function. It’s unusual. And perfect.

LIFE ON THE OUTSIDE

Throughout this project, my team and I focused on bringing the outside INSIDE with abundant natural light and organic fabrics, wood, lighting and accessories. My adventurous clients love nature. Together with Thompson Building Group, we transformed a lackluster yard into an outdoor living area. The haven includes a complete cook’s kitchen with a Green Egg, as well as a dining area and exterior family room.

Here at Lisa Sherry Interieurs, my team lived and breathed this home renovation and design project for many. Looking back, I appreciate every moment and step in the journey even more. Architect, builder, designer and homeowners came together for a truly transformative experience. I love reinvention!

LOVE, LISA
